Celebrating the Summer Solstice with Feng Shui

I can hardly believe that midsummer is almost here! Although like many wondering where our ‘summer’ is.

The Summer Solstice is today 20th June 2024, the longest day of the year, is a perfect reminder to savour the extended evenings.

This period is significant in Chinese wisdom, as the summer fire energy reaches its peak, symbolizing the height of yang energy with its growth and expansion, the most active and vibrant part of the year, just before we gradually shift into the yin phase that begins with the fall equinox for many traditions, it signifies the peak of the light’s return.

It’s a beautiful time to celebrate, and I’m excited to share ways you can enjoy the benefits of this magical day in the months ahead. Embrace balance, gentle exercise, gratitude, self-care, and intuition to fully experience the joy and energy of the summer solstice.

Using Feng Shui to Welcome the Summer Solstice

As we move from the yang to the yin part of the year, it’s important to focus on self-care and grounding rituals. Here are some feng shui practices to help you harmonize with this seasonal transition:

  1. Water Elements: The summer solstice is characterised by intense fire energy. To balance this, incorporate the water element into your home. Transform your space by replacing heavy fabrics, or pillows with lighter materials such as linen and cotton. Introduce cooler colours like blue, green, and white to counteract the summer heat. Think here of cooling the home and environment. Open windows for flow and breeze a bit like flowing water.
  2. Nature and Blossoming: Reflect the blossoming nature outside by bringing fresh flowers into your home. This not only resonates with the fire energy of summer but also symbolises growth and beauty. Place three different fresh bouquets around your living space to remind yourself of life’s bounty. The scent of fresh flowers through open windows can be calming and grounding.
  3. Embrace Balance: The abundant yang energy may naturally encourage more socializing and activity. Enjoy the laughter and company of loved ones, but also take time to care for your heart’s energy. Relax in nature to recharge and maintain balance, preventing burnout as we transition into autumn.
  4. Gentle Exercise: Harmonise with seasonal energy by practising Qigong outdoors or engaging in nature bathing. Swimming in cooling yin water is another excellent way to balance the heat of the yang fire energy.
  1. Practice Gratitude: This season of expansion is a great time to amplify positivity by practising gratitude. Sit down and list everything you’re thankful for and embrace the feeling of abundance.
  2. Follow Your Intuition: The heightened fire energy illuminates both our inner and outer worlds. Use this time to reflect inwardly and address any internal dilemmas or questions, seeking clarity on what you truly want.
