Advanced Feng Shui Tips for a Productive and Harmonious Home Office

work office and feng shui help

In our previous blog, we explored the basics of creating a harmonious home office using Feng Shui principles. Now that you have your workspace set up, it’s time to delve deeper into advanced Feng Shui techniques. These tips will help you fine-tune your environment to maximise productivity, creativity, and overall well-being. Whether you’re working from home permanently or occasionally, these strategies will elevate your home office to the next level.

1. Activate the Wealth Corner

In Feng Shui, the southeast corner of your office is known as the wealth corner. Activating this area can enhance your financial prosperity and career success.

Tip: Place a healthy, green plant or a small water fountain in the southeast corner of your office. Plants symbolise growth, while water represents abundance. Avoid cluttering this area to allow the energy to flow freely. Add items here that feel rich and abundant to you.

2. Optimise Your Desk Layout

Beyond the basic command position, there are other desk layout considerations that can further boost your productivity.

Tip: Keep the front of your desk clear to welcome new opportunities. Place your most frequently used items within arm’s reach to minimise distractions. Use organisers to keep your desk tidy and free of unnecessary clutter. Do not out paperwork on the floor.

3. Use Crystals for Positive Energy

Crystals are powerful tools in Feng Shui that can enhance the energy of your home office. Different crystals have various properties that can support your work environment.

Tip: Place a clear quartz crystal on your desk to amplify focus and clarity. Citrine is known as the merchant’s stone and can attract wealth and success. Amethyst can promote calmness and reduce stress.

4. Balance Yin and Yang

A balanced home office should have a mix of yin (passive) and yang (active) elements. Too much of one or the other can create an imbalance that affects your productivity and well-being.

Tip: Incorporate soft lighting, comfortable furniture, and soothing colours for yin energy. Add bright lights, vibrant colours, and lively plants for yang energy. Adjust these elements based on how you feel throughout the day.

5. Incorporate Symbols of Success

Symbols play a significant role in Feng Shui, as they can subconsciously influence your mindset and energy. Surrounding yourself with symbols of success can inspire and motivate you.

Tip: Display awards, certificates, or items that represent your achievements. Use images or objects that symbolise your goals, such as a vision board or inspiring artwork.

6. Maintain Good Air Quality

Air quality is often overlooked but is crucial for a healthy and productive home office. Stagnant air can lead to sluggish energy and decreased focus.

Tip: Open windows regularly to allow fresh air to circulate. Ideally use front door to welcome in good energy flow.

7. Keep Technology in Check

While technology is essential for modern work, too much of it can disrupt the energy flow in your home office. Be mindful of how you use and position your electronic devices.

Tip: Place your computer and other electronic devices in a way that minimises electromagnetic interference. Use cable organisers to keep cords tidy and out of sight. Take regular breaks from screens to rest your eyes and mind. Keep laptops and devises well organise too, adding your vision board to screen saver.

By applying these advanced Feng Shui tips, you can create a home office that not only supports your productivity but also enhances your overall well-being.

A well-balanced and harmonious workspace can lead to greater success, creativity, and happiness in your professional life.

Celebrating the Summer Solstice with Feng Shui

I can hardly believe that midsummer is almost here! Although like many wondering where our ‘summer’ is.

The Summer Solstice is today 20th June 2024, the longest day of the year, is a perfect reminder to savour the extended evenings.

This period is significant in Chinese wisdom, as the summer fire energy reaches its peak, symbolizing the height of yang energy with its growth and expansion, the most active and vibrant part of the year, just before we gradually shift into the yin phase that begins with the fall equinox for many traditions, it signifies the peak of the light’s return.

It’s a beautiful time to celebrate, and I’m excited to share ways you can enjoy the benefits of this magical day in the months ahead. Embrace balance, gentle exercise, gratitude, self-care, and intuition to fully experience the joy and energy of the summer solstice.

Using Feng Shui to Welcome the Summer Solstice

As we move from the yang to the yin part of the year, it’s important to focus on self-care and grounding rituals. Here are some feng shui practices to help you harmonize with this seasonal transition:

  1. Water Elements: The summer solstice is characterised by intense fire energy. To balance this, incorporate the water element into your home. Transform your space by replacing heavy fabrics, or pillows with lighter materials such as linen and cotton. Introduce cooler colours like blue, green, and white to counteract the summer heat. Think here of cooling the home and environment. Open windows for flow and breeze a bit like flowing water.
  2. Nature and Blossoming: Reflect the blossoming nature outside by bringing fresh flowers into your home. This not only resonates with the fire energy of summer but also symbolises growth and beauty. Place three different fresh bouquets around your living space to remind yourself of life’s bounty. The scent of fresh flowers through open windows can be calming and grounding.
  3. Embrace Balance: The abundant yang energy may naturally encourage more socializing and activity. Enjoy the laughter and company of loved ones, but also take time to care for your heart’s energy. Relax in nature to recharge and maintain balance, preventing burnout as we transition into autumn.
  4. Gentle Exercise: Harmonise with seasonal energy by practising Qigong outdoors or engaging in nature bathing. Swimming in cooling yin water is another excellent way to balance the heat of the yang fire energy.
  1. Practice Gratitude: This season of expansion is a great time to amplify positivity by practising gratitude. Sit down and list everything you’re thankful for and embrace the feeling of abundance.
  2. Follow Your Intuition: The heightened fire energy illuminates both our inner and outer worlds. Use this time to reflect inwardly and address any internal dilemmas or questions, seeking clarity on what you truly want.

Transform Your Home: Adopt These 6 Cleaning Habits Today!

Habits to help support you.

Over my last few blogs, I have been talking about decluttering and another blog on the comparison difference between tidying, cleaning and decluttering, check it here if you have not read it yet.

So today I thought I would talk about the cleaning side. We’ve all visited homes that just scream “immaculate.” Everything shines, is well-organised, and there’s not a speck of dust or dirt in sight. But how do they manage it?

Here are six habits people with consistently clean homes, that you can adopt too. It’s more than just picking up a few quick cleaning tips. It’s about committing to cleaning as you go and stopping messes at the door.

Habits of People with Clean Homes

  1. Have a Strict Cleaning Routine—and stick to it,

Professional cleaners often emphasize the importance of a cleaning routine, and those with spotless homes enforce this as a rule. Alex Cortez, professional cleaner at Denton Maids, says:

“Clean homes have people who clean every day and organise their tasks throughout the week. Spend 20-30 minutes daily, and no room stays messy for long. For example, clean the kitchen on Mondays, bathrooms on Tuesdays, bedrooms on Wednesdays, living room on Thursdays, and anything else on Fridays.”

2. Clean as you go.

Many cleaning tasks are easier when done immediately rather than letting them pile up. In the kitchen. By washing dishes, utensils, and countertops as you prepare meals, you prevent them from piling up, making cleanup faster. This lets you focus on cooking without worrying about a messy kitchen later. I often remind my children to do a nightly tidy-up to save them time over the weekend when they do their cleaning. Little and often the key here.

3. They always have cleaning supplies on hand.

Keeping essential cleaning aids accessible means, you can address spills, stains, and dust as soon as you see them. Maintain a list of your favourite cleaning products and store them where you use them, like bathroom cleaners in the bathroom and kitchen cleaners in the kitchen, to make quick cleaning effortless.

4. Use preventative strategies to stop dirt.

Preventing dirt is easier than constantly cleaning it. What can you do to help prevent dirt e.g. don’t wear shoes indoors, clean, muddy boots straight away. This simple step prevents a lot of dirt, grime, and dust from being tracked inside.

5. Have an opening and closing routine.

Despite cleaning throughout the day, some tasks might still be left for the morning or evening. Some of these habits include making the bed in the morning, which sets a positive tone for the day, and ensures no dishes are left in the sink at night. Starting and ending the day with these routines helps maintain a clean home and a calm mind.

6. Think about some smart home help.

Maintaining a spotless home can be time-consuming, but smart home technology can help. Such as robot vacuums running daily make a huge difference and are now quite affordable. Smart air purifiers and kitchen appliances also help manage tasks, making cleaning more efficient, some washers even come with timers to start alone, as well as cookers have wifi abilities too, I know our oven has this but never really stepped into trying it out.

5 top tips for starting to declutter

So, you’re probably here because you’re ready to tackle that clutter, right? Facing a heap of stuff to sort through can feel pretty overwhelming. But trust me, once you’ve got everything neatly organised, you’ll be riding that feel-good wave and loving your rooms or home again.

Decluttering is totally my jam these days. There’s something oddly therapeutic about zoning in and just getting it done. My advice? Set aside a couple of hours, cue up some tunes, and just vibe with it.

This five-step guide breaks down the whole decluttering process, making it easier for you to follow along and get the job done. So, let’s dive in or save this for later—because let’s face it, life gets busy…

HERE’S HOW TO DECLUTTER YOUR HOME IN FIVE SIMPLE STEPS

Let’s give your place that fresh makeover with these easy-to-follow steps.

STEP 1: ENVISION THE END RESULT

I’m big on manifestation. Picture how you want your rooms to look once they’re decluttered and organised. This not only fires up your motivation but also helps you pinpoint what you really want to toss out, making the whole process less stressful.

STEP 2: SORT ITEMS INTO CATEGORIES

Room by room, divide your stuff into three piles: keep, donate and bin. Pro tip: Lay out a blanket or use boxes beforehand to make moving things around easier. When deciding whether to part with something, ask yourself how much you actually use it and if it holds sentimental value. If it’s neither useful nor sentimental, it’s rubbish or donated.

STEP 3: CHECK THE DONATE AND BIN PILES?

Now that you’ve got your bin and donate pile, sift through it. Separate the genuine trash from items that could find a new home. If they’re still in good nick—clean and unbroken—consider passing them on.  It’s way better for the planet than binning. Of course, some things are beyond saving, and that’s okay—bid them goodbye guilt-free.

STEP 4: GET ORGANISED

Stash away loose items neatly. Think cubes for the bedroom, fridge organisers for the kitchen, and racks and containers for the bathroom or get creative in the living room with ottomans and coffee tables that double as secret storage spots.

STEP 5: LABEL THOSE STORAGE CONTAINERS

Labelling your boxes makes finding stuff easier. No more rummaging through cabinets! Plus, it’s handy for keeping things separate. Go for sticker labels or grab a handheld label maker for extra convenience.

Spring cleaning

Take a slow spring clean.

We live in a world obsessed with hustle and bustle. We want everything to be done quickly and efficiently, especially our household chores and spring cleaning. I am so one of them.

This year, however, I am going to make my spring cleaning a slow cleaning – a more mindful approach to preparing our homes for the warmer months that prioritises spring cleaning without getting overwhelmed rather than quick.

There are many benefits for both your home and your mind.

What is slow cleaning?

The practice of slow cleaning is one where you don’t focus on cleaning everything as fast as you can to tick it off your spring cleaning checklist, but rather take your time and enjoy the process while you clean. Removing the pressures off ourselves, however, still creates the desired results.

By doing this slow approach you can make it more mindful or use it as a time for practising gratitude, it can certainly help to make the experience more relaxing and enjoyable – especially when dealing with the most forgotten spring cleaning dirt spots.

Here are four ways to use slow cleaning.

1. Try one task a day

You might have heard of the different day, different room housekeeping tip, but how about the one-task, one-day schedule to tackle your spring-cleaning checklist?

The one cleaning method I use is to perform one small cleaning task a day. This ensures that things don’t build up over time and you’re left with a mess that can cause anxiety and seem far more overwhelming. Break up your cleaning over the week,  so that you focus on one thing per day.

2. Make it a mindful exercise

If you want to create a more mindful home and lifestyle, your spring-cleaning routine is a great place to start, instead of viewing cleaning as a chore, approach it with a sense of intention.

Put on some calming music, light a scented candle, and focus on the satisfaction of creating a clean and organised space. Don’t push yourself too hard. Listen to your body and take breaks when needed. A clean space should support your well-being, not hamper it.

3. Focus on mindful decluttering

Decluttering can be stressful, but there is a great benefit to having fewer items cluttering up counters and cabinets.

The best way to stay on top of things is to have less clutter. By getting rid of things around the house that you don’t use, you’ll have more space and less cleaning to do. Once you’ve done this, you’ll have more time to focus on the important things around your house and ensure that they are always clean and that your rooms are clutter-free.

4. Try the Pomodoro method

Whether you are looking to spring clean your house in one day or are spreading a series of tasks over a few weeks, using something like the Pomodoro timer can ensure that you take frequent breaks to avoid wearing yourself out.

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a kitchen timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks.

For example, set an intention to clear the kitchen set a timer for 25mintues, when it rings stop and rest for 5 minutes then reset repeating this maybe in blocks of 4. Which end up taken 100 minutes of active cleaning time. If you do this once a week, in about a month you’ll see an incredible transformation of your home.

When preparing for spring cleaning, considering a slow cleaning approach from the beginning will help you plan your tasks to ensure you do not miss anything. Even noting down all the areas to do however best work for you room by room or more detailed.

Spring cleaning is a man-made concept and do what is right for you, your times scale and abilities. Get others to help too, let’s make it more fun and enjoyable.

7 Insights into The Psychology of Stuff

Let’s take a look through the psychology of stuff with seven quirky insights! Get ready for a lighthearted exploration of why we buy and how to resist the urge to splurge.

  1. The Scarcity Loop:

Ever felt like you just had to have something because it felt scarce? Blame it on the “Scarcity Brain” theory. It’s like a whirlwind of impulses, from binge-buying to compulsive snacking, all because we think there’s not enough to go around. But hey, maybe that extra unicorn-shaped mug wasn’t such a necessity after all.

  • Social Comparison Syndrome:

Have you ever scrolled through life and suddenly felt like your life was lacking? Yep, that’s social comparison syndrome at work. Whether it’s fancy cars or exotic vacations, seeing others flaunt their stuff can make us feel like we’re missing out. Remember to be you, live your life your way.

  • Advertising Magic:

Ever been swayed by a catchy jingle or a flashy billboard? Welcome to the world of advertising, where marketers work their magic to make us believe we need things we never knew we wanted. But before you succumb to the hype, ask yourself, do I really need another gadget that does the same thing as my old one?

  • The Quest for Fulfillment:

We’ve all fallen into the trap of thinking that stuff will make us happy. But the truth is, materialism is like a sugar rush – it gives us a quick high but leaves us crashing later. So instead of chasing after possessions, why not focus on experiences that feed the soul? After all, memories last longer than gadgets.

  • FOMO Frenzy:

The fear of missing out can turn even the most sensible person into a compulsive shopper. Thanks to social media, we’re bombarded with images of other people living their best lives, making us feel like we’re missing out on something. But here’s a secret – the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Sometimes, it’s just artificial turf.

  • Retail Therapy:

We’ve all indulged in a little retail therapy now and then. But before you go on a spree, ask yourself, will this really make me feel better? Sometimes, a walk in the park or a chat with a friend can lift our spirits more than any purchase ever could.

  • The Hedonic Adaptation:

This is the phenomenon where we quickly get used to the things we once thought would make us happy. But here’s the thing – happiness isn’t about constantly chasing after the next big thing. It’s about appreciating what we have and finding joy in the simple pleasures of life. So let’s kick off our shoes, take a deep breath, and savour the moment.

When we look at our stuff, go shopping think about the above as well as these 3 questions I ask all my declutter clients.

  1. Do I really need it?
  2. Does it give me joy?
  3. Is this item functional in my life?

How to know when you need to Declutter?!

Have you observed a recent increase in clutter around your space and wondered about the telltale signs indicating it’s time for a decluttering session?

Often, clutter accumulates gradually, going unnoticed until it begins affecting mood and daily functioning. Recognizing signs like difficulty in using functional spaces due to clutter can prompt the need for decluttering.

Despite the common belief that clutter only becomes a problem when it’s visibly bad throughout your home, specific indicators suggest that it’s time to regain control over your living space.

Difficulty Finding Items: The gradual accumulation of clutter often sneaks up on you, making it challenging to locate everyday essentials like keys or documents. Establishing a focused approach, such as following a schedule or a decluttering challenge, can prevent feeling overwhelmed.

Prolonged Cleaning and Tidying: If routine cleaning tasks seem to take forever, it’s likely due to an excess of possessions. Even after tidying up, maintaining a clean environment becomes a constant struggle. Excessive clutter complicates cleaning efforts, leading to neglected areas accumulating dust and grime.

Anxiety About Hosting Guests: Feeling embarrassed or stressed about visitors seeing your cluttered home can be draining. Even if they only go into one or two rooms.

Negative Emotional Impact: If being at home evokes feelings of stress or anxiety, it may be due to the cluttered environment. These negative emotions signal a pressing need for decluttering.

Storage Space Overload: When storage areas overflow with items, drawers become jammed, and shelves are overcrowded, it’s a clear indication of having too much stuff.

Cluttered Surfaces: Constant clutter accumulation on surfaces like countertops and desks indicates a need for decluttering to create more functional spaces.

Decluttering Strategies: Instead of attempting to tackle clutter all at once, start with small, manageable tasks to avoid overwhelm. Creating a checklist and addressing one area at a time can streamline the decluttering process.

Acknowledging warning signs of clutter and taking proactive steps to declutter can result in a more organized and tranquil living environment. Once the clutter is addressed, incorporating organising techniques can help maintain a tidy and harmonious space.

Embracing Renewal: Spring Equinox and Feng Shui

As winter fades away and nature begins to awaken, we find ourselves at a juncture of celestial and philosophical significance: the Spring Equinox. This transitional moment, where day and night are equal in length, symbolizes the emergence of light, growth, and balance. Coincidentally, the principles of Feng Shui, an ancient Chinese practice, also revolve around these very concepts of equilibrium and renewal. In this exploration, we delve into the parallels between the Spring Equinox and Feng Shui, uncovering pathways to embrace renewal and harmony in our lives.

The Spring Equinox: The Spring Equinox marks the official arrival of spring, heralding a season of rejuvenation and vitality. It symbolizes the balance between light and darkness, warmth and cold, as the Earth tilts on its axis, granting equal lengths of day and night across the globe. This celestial event serves as a reminder of nature’s cyclical rhythm, inviting us to shed the dormancy of winter and embrace the promise of new beginnings. Whether through planting seeds, cleansing rituals, or simply basking in the sun’s warmth, the Equinox offers myriad ways to honor the spirit of renewal.

Feng Shui: Derived from ancient Chinese wisdom, Feng Shui is a practice rooted in the belief that our physical environments profoundly influence our well-being and success. At its core lies the principle of Qi, the life force energy that flows through all living things. By harmonizing the flow of Qi within our spaces, Feng Shui seeks to cultivate balance, prosperity, and harmony in our lives. From the strategic arrangement of furniture to the incorporation of elemental symbolism, Feng Shui empowers us to create environments that support our goals and nourish our spirits.

Connecting Spring Equinox and Feng Shui: At first glance, the Spring Equinox and Feng Shui may appear disparate, one rooted in celestial phenomena and the other in spatial design. However, upon closer examination, their underlying principles intertwine harmoniously. Both embody the essence of renewal, inviting us to shed stagnation and embrace growth. By harnessing the energy of the Equinox, we can infuse our Feng Shui practices with a sense of intention and vitality. Whether by decluttering our spaces to welcome the influx of new energy or incorporating symbols of spring into our décor, we align ourselves with the natural rhythms of the universe, fostering balance and abundance in our lives.

As we stand at the threshold of spring, let us heed the whispers of renewal that permeate the air. Through the convergence of the Spring Equinox and Feng Shui, we discover pathways to embrace balance, harmony, and vitality in our lives. As we sow the seeds of intention and nurture the fertile soil of our environments, may we cultivate spaces that reflect our deepest aspirations and nourish our spirits.

In this season of rebirth, let us embark on a journey of transformation, guided by the timeless wisdom of nature and the ancient principles of Feng Shui.
